Find you own voice is a form of organic search
“Organic search is a method for entering one or a plurality of search items in a single data string into a search engine. Organic search results are listings on search engine results pages that appear because of their relevance to the search terms, as opposed to their being advertisements.”

There nothing like the satisfaction of holding you first printed book in your hand. Almost the same feeling comes when people tell you that they like your book or leave you a positive review on Amazon. Also, there’s nothing more traumatic than realizing you are not that good of a writer to begin with and, while you have talent, so are another million writers. The hard work of finding your voice and learning the writing techniques you need starts with the first 100000 words.
Writing, as any human activity, is a continuous search for you voice, relevant results, a narrowing, tough, and dirty decision process about how you live your life.
Today I was a passenger. I called an UberX. The driver was a very nice lady. We talked as usual. I didn’t fail in asking all the questions passengers do about how she likes Uber and if it’s worth it. Her answers were amazing. I wasn’t expecting to ever meet somebody who was born to be an Uber driver. She was passionate about it and had a lot of stuff figured out. We also exchanged food recipes.
It took almost 20 years for me to find my own voice. To find an activity that will keep me up at night and becomes as natural as breathing. I was good at lot of things I did professionally or in my personal life because I was working hard for every little thing I got. Luck was also important. I found satisfaction in my work, but I felt as an outsider most of the time. It wasn’t just my genetic need to wander through the world. It was that heart throb of not fitting with places or people not even for an afternoon.
Now I’m here, between jobs, driving Uber, dreaming about conquering the world. Not an impossible endeavor mind you. I’ll get to a narrow way of doing things, a path of minimal resistance. Touch people, touch places, make good deeds, move on.
I wonder how much time I will be able to stay put this time. It will be a while because I have a lot of things to learn and Toronto is a great place to live in. Eventually I will finish doing what I came here for and I’ll be riding into the sunset towards a new place of learning and meeting people. It’s a big planet.
Short disclaimer: The Journal of an Uber Driver is a work of fiction.
Long disclaimer: The literary exercise to define a nowadays character for a novel led me to create these 25 blog posts. This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, places, events and incidents are either the products of the author’s imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental. Any opinion expressed about Uber should not be interpreted as having a negative connotation. I admire the company as an incumbent of the platform economy and I am a registered Uber driver for research purposes.
